A bounty hunter’s partners to lovers’ story.
The hunt is on… and he’s the prey.
Bradford (Ford) King was sure he had the rest of his life mapped out. Though he was no longer a SEAL Lieutenant, his brother was home safe and he had a job that still allowed him to satisfy his hunger for hunting bad guys. Life was simple, no distractions or complications – at age forty-six – that’s all Ford wanted. What he didn’t want was his work partner, sniper/watchman, Dana, giving him s**t all the time.
Dana Cadby had grown up labeled a roughneck from the wrong side of the tracks. He’d fought, scrounged, and survived despite a father that constantly told him he couldn’t. Dana pulled himself up by his own boot straps and made a name for himself in the marksman community. He’d been Duke’s bounty watchman for five years. It was his job to ensure their safety, watch their backs. At thirty-three, he was trusted, well respected by his peers, his bosses, his friends… so why couldn’t he earn the same respect from his partner?
Dana knew he was bisexual before he graduated high school. He also knew he was attracted to the huge, 6’3”, SEAL from the moment he and his brother came to join their team. It wasn’t easy for him to tamp down his immediate reaction to Ford’s thick muscles, full beard, and dark eyes. Still, Dana exhibited nothing but professionalism towards him, not wanting to make his ‘straight’ partner uncomfortable.
After Dana took back his ex-girlfriend, he’d noticed an intensification in Ford’s bad attitude. One that turned aggressive and downright antagonistic, and Dana was damned if he’d just lay down and take it. He was gonna make that man respect him if it was the last thing he did.
When Duke sends Dana and Ford out to track down their most dangerous bounty yet, they both embrace the fact that they make one hell of a team… but they fight tooth and nail against the powerful intimacy brewing between them.
Beware: When Ford and Dana connect, no fugitive can hide from the hunter and his watchman.
This story is a part of a series but can stand alone. It does not end on a cliffhanger and has a HEA.
Disclaimer: This book is about MM romance, albeit there is a very brief MF scene.
“Alright, let’s break for lunch. Two hours, since we’ll be here late again tonight.” Duke spoke while he put on his dark blue bomber jacket and shades. Quick was standing beside him, waiting for Dana and Brian to join them. Ford tried not to watch as his coworkers left, not wanting to look Dana in his eyes at the moment. Ford was chickening out, not even putting up a fight to win Dana over. Why should he? He loved the chase, he’d stalk and capture just about anything or anyone, but he refused to chase after love. Love was never high on his list of things he wanted to accomplish. He’d had such a fulfilling military career – for the time it lasted – and he had his brother, so he was good.
Ford tilted back in his chair wondering if he truly meant what he was thinking. He was about to get up and get himself something cold to drink and order in a sandwich when the front door to their office opened and Dana strolled back inside. Ford didn’t say anything as Dana solemnly walked to his desk and sat down.
“No longer hungry?” Ford finally asked, after Dana refused to acknowledge his curious stare.
“Nope. I guess you aren’t, either. Or you declined a free lunch because you didn’t like the company attending. Well, you don’t have to anymore, I’ve decided to stay and make some… important calls.” Dana’s knowing sneer and reasoning was an obvious jab at the lame excuse Ford had given earlier.
Ford smirked and shook his head, continuing back into the kitchen murmuring under his breath. “Fuckin’… grow up.” Ford thought he’d have a couple hours of peace, but Dana had ruined that—
“Fuck you, Ford. You got one more goddamn time to tell me to grow up and I’m going to give you a glimpse of the man that I am… the man you keep fuckin’ insulting,” Dana snarled from close behind Ford.
Ford heard Dana’s heavy steps, realizing he didn’t voice his insult as quietly as he thought. Regardless, he wasn’t in the mood to soothe Dana’s fragile ego. Instead of responding, Ford kept his back to Dana and concentrated on topping off his cup of coffee. He could feel Dana’s heat, his anger and frustration. Ford widened his stance and brought his cup up to his lips.
“Damn you are hot and cold, man. I thought we were straight, Ford. What’s up? You’re acting like you can’t stand to be around me. What have I done now, huh? I show up for work and you won’t look at me for two seconds, or speak to me… at least without being a dick.”
Ford set his mug down and spun around, leveling Dana with a hard scowl. “Why are you keeping tabs on me, kid?”
“I’m not a goddamn kid—”
“The hell you’re not!” Ford barked.
Dana looked infuriated. He tightened his stubbled jaw and Ford had to keep his focus trained on Dana’s eyes and not his plump mouth. “I want to get this shit resolved, once and for all. I don’t even understand what the hell is happening here. All I do know is you can’t stand the sight of me right now. We start surveillance next week, Ford. Duke has us working together – should I tell him to reassign you?”
Ford narrowed his eyes. He was good at reading people, and right now the man in front of him struggled with his thoughts. Ford watched Dana gulp down a massive lump of nothing as his Adam’s apple bobbed and his throat worked to swallow his stress. Ford eased his large body away from the counter, creeping closer to Dana with his mouth set in a stubborn line. “You can tell Duke anything you want to, just keep my name out of it.”
Dana grunted when Ford brushed past him, hitting him hard in the shoulder when he did.
